BRANSGORE SCHOOL WALKING BUS

Bransgore School began their first WALKING BUS in March. You can see us every morning and afternoon in our distinctive fluorescent yellow and green jackets, walking safely to and from school. Volunteer adults act as the ‘Bus Driver’ and the ‘Bus Conductor’.This ‘WALKING BUS’ is an idea that is in successful use elsewhere in Hampshire and in other counties. The scheme began in Hertfordshire. When finding information to set this one up, I talked to a dad who has been part of the first ever walking bus since it began three years ago. There are many ‘Walking Bus’ websites on the net a good one is at :www.walkingbus.com.  These give information from how to set one up and who to talk to, to where to get the jackets. Some Buses use a rope for the children to hold and some use trolleys to carry heavy bags. In Bransgore it is a free service and no payment is required.

We all enjoy walking to and from our school. The children benefit from healthy exercise, stimulating their brains in the morning and getting rid of excess energy in the evening. Parents have an extra 40 minutes per day without kids and the environment is getting less exhaust fumes. And at the moment, while we have less parking places, during the building work at school, we are ensuring that there is less congestion at peak traveling times.

The first morning we walked, it rained. We all bought waterproof trousers after that soaking!!

We have had a lot of comments and enquiries about our function from passers-by, all of it friendly. We hope to set up another walking bus soon, on the ‘other side of the road’ to include Chapel Lane, Brookside and Wiltshire Gardens. So if you would like to volunteer to be a helper (unpaid), we would love to hear from you.
